This 4-hour course gives structural engineers a thorough grounding in fatigue design of steel structures. The course will cover the fundamental concepts of fatigue and how they relate to the design checks required by BS EN 1993-1-9. Two worked examples (a crane runway beam and a composite bridge beam) will be provides to demonstrate the calculation process. The course is recommended for any structural engineers who design or assess structures subject to cyclic loading, in particular designers of steel frames supporting cranes. It is also recommended for graduate bridge engineers. No prior knowledge of fatigue is required.
Topics include:Fundamental concepts of fatigue: Stress ranges, S–N curves, cumulative damage, and the constant amplitude fatigue limit
Detail categories for plain, welded, and bolted details
Crack initiation and growth
Fatigue loading actions – crane classification and bridge fatigue load models
The safe life assessment method and partial factor selection
Reservoir counting for complex load histories
Worked examples: crane runway beam and composite bridge beam
Overview of changes in Second Generation Eurocodes as applies to fatigue design
The sessions will conclude with a Q&A. Handouts of the slides will be provided ahead of presentation.
